Pre-Conference Course

Understand & Explain Pain

Lorimer Moseley, Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, Australia

This one day lecture-format course presents current thought in pain sciences as it relates to patients and clinicians.  There are three theoretical sessions: (i) Understanding the paradigm - pain is a protective output of the brain, based on a bucketload of inputs;  (ii) As pain persists the nervous and immune systems change, which facilitates pain and alters the relative impact of contributing factors; (iii) Understanding pain and imparting understanding of pain to patients improves the outcome of treatment.  A final session looks at practial ways to integrate this information into clinical practice and methods to facilitate conceptual change in patients.
